28 people were involved in the crash
Fifteen people have been killed in a road accident involving a bus and a truck in northern Nigeria’s Katsina State.
The crash happened on Saturday in Mairuwa village along the Funtua-Sokoto highway after the bus, travelling from Kano, suffered a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control and collide with a truck belonging to the Dangote Group.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the accident was “avoidable and preventable”, blaming poor vehicle maintenance and driver negligence.
According to the FRSC, 28 people were involved in the crash, with 13 survivors taken to hospital with injuries. The victims include 23 male adults, one female adult, one male child, and three female children.
A statement from the FRSC said: “Fifteen people, comprising 11 male adults, one female adult, and three female children, died at the scene.”
The injured were taken to Funtua General Hospital for treatment.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed concern over the high number of accidents caused by poor vehicle maintenance in Nigeria, calling for more compliance with road safety regulations, including routine checks and speed limits.
Road accidents are common in Nigeria, often due to poor road conditions, speeding, and a lack of enforcement of traffic rules.
