  • Governor Obaseki advises incoming administration to prioritize security over politics, citing improved safety during his tenure
  • Obaseki credits technology and cooperation with security agencies for transforming Edo into one of Nigeria’s safest states

Edo State’s outgoing Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has urged incoming Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo to prioritize security over politics, cautioning that failure would lead to problems.

Obaseki shared this advice during a security meeting with leaders of security agencies in Benin.

Reflecting on his tenure, Obaseki noted that he is leaving Edo’s security in a stronger state than he found it in 2016. “My advice to the incoming administration is to take security seriously and never put politics before it, as a secure environment is what citizens need,” Obaseki stated.

He attributed his success in securing the state to the cooperation of security agency heads, whom he thanked for their support. “Over the past eight years, we’ve prioritized security, investing in our state’s security structure, making Edo one of the safest places to live and do business in Nigeria,” he added.

According to Obaseki, the resulting security has driven local growth and attracted investor interest.

Obaseki highlighted the role of technology in his administration’s security efforts, explaining that it enabled thorough coverage, documentation, and incident response throughout the state.

He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in improving the country, stating, “No one can fix Nigeria but us.”
