- He directed the occupants to appoint five representatives to meet with FCT Ministry officials on Tuesday to discuss possible assistance
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed his commitment to removing shanties in Abuja to enhance security in the capital.
Addressing residents of a shanty village in Wuye on Sunday, Wike expressed concerns about the security risks posed by settlements with unidentifiable occupants, particularly those near critical infrastructure like railway lines.
Wike emphasized that the government would not be deterred by threats or blackmail from any group, noting the importance of ensuring that Abuja remains safe.
However, he directed the occupants to appoint five representatives to meet with FCT Ministry officials on Tuesday to discuss possible assistance.
He stated, “We have identified areas that pose security threats… no government worth its salt will fold its hands and allow this place to be occupied by hoodlums or people no one can account for.”
In response, Abba Garu, representing the shanty residents, acknowledged the recent demolitions, noting that this was the 22nd time their structures had been destroyed. He appealed for government support in finding alternative shelter and assured that the residents would not rebuild as they had previously.
