  • Officials say the reopening follows the end of the rainy season

Authorities in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have reopened a slip road at the Galadimawa Interchange, previously closed during the rainy season to prevent flooding.

The slip road, which links the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway to Ring Road II, was barricaded in late June as a precautionary measure. Officials say the reopening follows the end of the rainy season.

Abdulrahman Mohammed, acting head of the FCT Emergency Management Department, said the closure has helped prevent fatalities in the area since 2020.

“The road floods every year, but closing it has saved lives. We thank residents for their understanding,” he said.

As dry season sets in, authorities are also stepping up fire safety campaigns to reduce incidents of bushfires and domestic blazes. Residents have been urged to handle flammable items carefully, keep gas cylinders outside their homes, and avoid storing petrol indoors.

Officials say the temporary culvert causing the road’s flooding will eventually be replaced by a bridge as part of ongoing upgrades to the Galadimawa Interchange.

Richard Dauda of the FCT Development Authority said the road will be reconstructed and elevated to permanently address the flooding problem.
