- The Plateau State Police confirmed the incident, stating that suspects were pursued for attempting to rob community members before being killed
Angry youths in the Jenta Adamu community, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Friday burned two suspected cult members to death.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred around 9:20 a.m., through its spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred.
He condemned the mob action and cautioned citizens against taking the law into their own hands.
According to DSP Alfred, the police received a distress call reporting the presence of a group of unidentified cultists attempting to rob community members.
“The report indicated that a mob pursued the invaders, mobbed them, and set them ablaze. Upon arrival at the scene, the police discovered the burnt bodies and recovered two locally fabricated pistols believed to belong to the suspects,” he stated.
The police evacuated the remains to the hospital morgue and have begun investigations into the incident.
Samuel John, a resident of Jenta Adamu, provided additional details, alleging that the suspects were phone thieves who had killed a community member earlier in the morning.
“Around 5:30 a.m., the suspects attacked someone in the community, snatched their phone, and fatally shot them. This angered the youths, who mobilized and captured the suspects, taking them to the riverside, where they were burned,” John recounted.
The Plateau State Police Command has reiterated its warning against jungle justice, emphasizing that suspects should be handed to the authorities for proper investigation and prosecution.
“As a civilized society, citizens must refrain from taking the law into their hands. Those found engaging in jungle justice will face severe consequences under the law,” the police stated.
