  • The Yobe State government has partnered with the Nigerian Army and local vigilantes to protect farmers and their crops during harvest
  • Over 70 motorcycles are patrolling areas prone to theft and insecurity, ensuring the safety of farmers and their harvested crops

The Yobe State government has enlisted the Nigerian Army and local vigilantes to protect farmers and their crops during the ongoing harvest season.

Farmers in Gujba, Damaturu, Karasuwa, and Gashua local government areas reportedly stay on their farms round the clock to guard their harvests. The state took action after rising concerns over theft and insecurity in some areas.

Following a security meeting chaired by the deputy governor, Brigadier General Abdulsalam Dahiru (Rtd), the Special Adviser on Security Matters, revealed that the decision was made to address the threats.

He explained that parts of Gujba LGA remain insurgency-prone, limiting access for police or civil defense agro-rangers.

Over 70 motorcycles operated by army personnel, vigilantes, hunters, and hybrid security teams are patrolling affected areas to combat the issue. These teams aim to protect farmers and their crops from thieves and other threats.

Brigadier General Dahiru noted that the security efforts have been ongoing for three months and will continue until January 2025, ensuring that farmers safely evacuate all harvested crops.
