- The family has accused the police of negligence and human rights abuses, with Emmanuel’s body reportedly dumped in the morgue without any notification to his relatives
Jacob Emmanuel, a 22-year-old resident of Mpape, Abuja, has reportedly died in police custody after being detained for eight months without trial.
According to sources within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, Emmanuel was arrested by the Mpape Police Division in the presence of his mother, a widow, and later transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in Kado.
It was alleged that operatives demanded a bribe of N200,000 for his release.
Family members, including Emmanuel’s sick mother, petitioned multiple authorities, including the Commissioner of Police, the National Human Rights Commission, and the Inspector-General of Police, pleading for his release or for him to be charged to court. However, no action was taken, and they were denied access to him.
A police source confirmed to SaharaReporters on Tuesday that Emmanuel had died in custody, adding, “His corpse has been taken to Gwagwalada Teaching Hospital. He was truly sick in custody, and we tried to save his life.”
The family has accused the police of negligence and human rights abuses, with Emmanuel’s body reportedly dumped in the morgue without any notification to his relatives. Despite acknowledged receipt of their petitions, the police authorities failed to act on their requests for justice.
