Lagos State authorities have apprehended 92 individuals for alleged breaches of environmental laws and involvement in criminal activities, officials have said.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed on Thursday that 75 individuals, including five women, were detained during overnight raids conducted by the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps. The operations targeted areas such as Ikoyi, Lekki, and Victoria Island.

Key locations included Lugard Avenue, Admiralty Way, and Oniru Road in Ikoyi and Lekki, while Adetokunbo Ademola Street and Eko Hotel Roundabout were among the sites in Victoria Island where suspects were arrested.

Mr Wahab said those apprehended would be prosecuted in line with state laws. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring a clean and orderly environment, urging residents to comply with regulations.

Separately, the Lagos State Task Force detained 17 individuals during raids on Thursday, recovering fake naira notes and a stash of illicit substances, including Indian hemp and narcotics.

Task Force spokesperson Abdulraheem Gbadeyan said the operation, which took place at Gowon Estate and other areas, uncovered counterfeit currency in N200 and N500 denominations.

The agency’s chairman, Adetayo Akerele, emphasised the government’s zero-tolerance stance against illegal activities. “The suspects will face prosecution as investigations continue,” he said.

Residents have been encouraged to report suspicious activities to the authorities under the state’s “See Something, Say Something” initiative.
