The Nigerian police have detained Atom Magira, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), allegedly over criticism of Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.

Magira’s personal assistant, Mohammed Yahaya, confirmed that operatives of the Borno State Police Command arrested him on Sunday night.

Magira, a former All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial aspirant in the 2019 elections, is a prominent opposition figure known for challenging Governor Zulum’s policies.

Sources told Daily Nigerian that the arrest is linked to a “YES TO MERGER” campaign billboard featuring Magira’s image and calling for a merger of political parties in the state. The billboard was reportedly destroyed by unidentified individuals.

“It is on the orders of the state government. They don’t want a serious opposition. Since 1999, any credible opposition has been silenced, but Magira has remained consistent,” a source alleged.

As of Monday morning, Magira remains in custody, and it is unclear if he will face charges. Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, for comment have been unsuccessful.
