A 17-year-old boy has been arrested by police in Nigeria’s Ogun State for allegedly raping his neighbour’s 8-year-old daughter.
According to the Ogun State Police Command, the suspect, Jamiu Adebayo, lured the young girl into his parents’ sitting room in the Aregbe area of Abeokuta, where he allegedly committed the assault.
The command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, said the survivor’s mother, Olabode, was away when neighbours informed her that her daughter was bleeding from her private parts.
Initially, the young girl told her mother and neighbours that she had been injured by a stick. However, after further persuasion, she confessed that Adebayo had raped her.
The suspect allegedly took the girl to the bathroom to clean up and instructed her to change into another pair of underwear. He also persuaded her to lie about the incident, claiming that a stick had caused the injury.
Police say detectives have apprehended the suspect, and a medical examination has been conducted on the victim. Preliminary investigations are ongoing.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many calling for justice for the young victim.
