A Lassa fever outbreak in Taraba State has claimed the lives of 14 people.
It was discovered that the deaths and cases were reported in the state within the past three months.
Dr Kuni Joseph, Head of Clinical Services at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Jalingo, revealed the alarming figures, stating that six of the deaths occurred last week.
He revealed that between October 24, 2024, and January of this year, there were 84 suspected cases of Lassa fever, 33 of which were confirmed positive.
Dr. Joseph stated, however, that nine patients had been successfully treated and discharged, while six others remained hospitalised at the Federal Medical Centre Jalingo.
“This is the first time we are recording such a significant number of cases in Taraba State and efforts are being made to address the outbreak. We have intensified our efforts and with joint meetings held by FMC Jalingo, the Taraba State Ministry of Health, and officials from the World Health Organization (WHO), it will be addressed,” he said.
