The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the death of Adeyemi Adewale, a footballer with the Ilesa West Local Government Area team, who collapsed during the Adeleke Memorial Cup Final in Osogbo on Thursday.
Adewale, aged 29, reportedly slumped on the pitch at Ataoja School of Science and was rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital.
He was pronounced dead on arrival by medical personnel.
Police spokesperson Yemisi Opalola, in a statement, said, “Today, during the Adeleke Memorial Cup Final, one Adeyemi Adewale, a player of Ilesa West Football team, slumped on the pitch.
He was rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by a doctor.”
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue, and an investigation into the circumstances of his death is underway.
