- It will be conducted quarterly across the state’s 44 local government areas
The Kano State government has allocated N2.5 billion for mass weddings across the state as part of its 2025 budget.
The initiative, which will be conducted quarterly across the state’s 44 local government areas, was announced by the Commissioner for Planning and Budget, Musa Sulaiman Shanono, during a budget briefing.
The programme was first introduced under former Governor Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso and was revived by Governor Abba Yusuf, who in 2023 sponsored the weddings of over 1,800 couples at a cost of N854 million.
The budget for 2025, approved at N719.7 billion, represents a 65% increase from the previous year. The education sector received the largest share, with N205.9 billion allocated to various initiatives, including N4 billion for free education and N2.2 billion for a school feeding programme.
Shanono said the state’s projected revenue had increased due to the removal of fuel subsidies, leading to higher federal allocations.
Kano expects to generate N617 billion in revenue, with N531 billion coming from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) and N85.8 billion from internally generated revenue (IGR).
