- In the footage, some men with Ogunjobi were seen slapping the elderly man and forcing him to kneel and prostrate.
The Nigeria Police Force has taken Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, a suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, to court over an alleged attack on an elderly man.
The monarch’s actions sparked widespread anger after a video surfaced online, apparently showing him verbally and physically abusing his victim.
In the video, the victim is seen kneeling and prostrating on a dirt path as a deep voice showers him with insults.
Lanre Ogunlowo, Ogun state’s police commissioner, ordered an investigation into the incident, condemning all forms of abuse, harassment, and violence, regardless of the individuals involved.
Following this, the Ogun government suspended Ogunjobi for six months, stating that his behavior was unacceptable for a traditional ruler.
However, in a statement on Tuesday, Muyiwa Adejobi, the force spokesperson, revealed that the monarch has been charged with misconduct.
Adejobi stated that the traditional ruler faced a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
“The Kabiyesi Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, who assaulted one elderly man in a viral video, in Ifo Ogun State, has been charged to court today 4th February, 2025, on three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and conduct likely to cause breach of peace,” the statement said.
The force spokesperson said the traditional ruler was granted bail, while the police will continue upholding the law and core values.
He added that the case was adjourned to March 6, 2025.
