- The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024 over alleged war crimes
Amnesty International has criticised the United States for welcoming Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
In a statement on Wednesday, the human rights body accused former President Joe Biden’s administration of failing to act on Netanyahu’s arrest and said President Donald Trump is now “doubling down” by hosting him as the first foreign leader to visit the White House since his inauguration.
Netanyahu, who arrived in the US on Sunday, is meeting with Trump, military leaders, and members of Congress to discuss the Gaza ceasefire deal and Middle East policy.
“The US has a clear obligation under the Geneva Conventions to search for and try or extradite persons accused of war crimes. There must be no ‘safe haven’ for individuals alleged to have committed crimes against humanity,” Amnesty International stated.
The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024 over alleged war crimes during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, following accusations from South Africa and other countries of genocide.
Amnesty also condemned US military support for Israel, arguing that American weapons have contributed to war crimes in Gaza.
