- The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident
Hundreds of youths in Omagwa, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, took to the streets on Sunday, February 9, 2025, to protest the killing of Bright Chukwuma Egbule by police officers.
The demonstrators blocked the Omagwa section of the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, causing a major traffic disruption. Some carried Egbule’s body and attempted to storm the local police station before the Chairman of Ikwerre LGA, Israel Agbosi, intervened, promising that those responsible would be brought to justice.
According to eyewitnesses, Egbule was shot dead by officers from the Omagwa Police Division on Saturday, February 8, while in his compound. A family source said he was at home with his wife when police stormed the premises, allegedly searching for a drug dealer.
“The officers came with full force, saying they were after a drug dealer, but they killed an innocent man,” the source said.
Chairman Agbosi described the killing as “unacceptable and unfortunate” and urged the protesters to remain calm. He assured them that the local government would ensure justice is served.
The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the incident. Spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko said the officers involved had been arrested and detained while investigations were ongoing. She added that Egbule’s body had been moved to the morgue and that normalcy had been restored in the area.
