The Niger State Government has announced plans to introduce incentives aimed at reducing food prices during the upcoming Ramadan season.
Governor Mohammed Umaru-Bago disclosed this on Wednesday when he received a delegation from the Gates Foundation at the Government House in Minna.
The governor highlighted that the state had harvested over one million metric tons of maize and had successfully stabilised food prices through Niger Foods. He assured the Gates Foundation of continued collaboration, particularly in areas like crop and livestock production, aquaculture, and housing.
Umaru-Bago also revealed plans to expand from one to three cropping seasons annually and underscored the need for enhanced irrigation to address climate change challenges.
Obai Khalifa, the Gates Foundation’s agricultural development leader, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to addressing underfunding and climate change, critical issues for African agriculture.
The partnership between Niger Foods and the Gates Foundation was praised for its role in transforming the state’s agricultural sector.
