- Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, emphasized that these illegal activities degrade the environment
The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), has warned property owners, agents, and private occupiers against illegal recycling and scavenging in unlicensed facilities.
In a public notice, LAWMA condemned the growing trend of unauthorized waste sorting, dumping, and trading of recyclables in unapproved locations, stressing that such activities violate the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.
The agency warned that violators would face strict enforcement measures, including prosecution and facility shutdowns.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, emphasized that these illegal activities degrade the environment and pose health risks. He also cautioned property owners permitting such practices that they risk property revocation and legal consequences.
On Thursday, LAWMA, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), dislodged illegal recyclers and squatters at the Ijora-Olopa underbridge, with plans to extend enforcement across the state.
Gbadegesin urged residents to comply with waste management laws and patronize licensed recyclers, reiterating the government’s commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.
