Bayelsa State Police spokesperson, Musa Mohammed, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident

A 200-level Chemical Engineering student from the Federal University, Otuoke, has reportedly drowned while attempting to swim across the Ekoli Creek in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, over a N300 bet.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday morning, has left the student’s body yet to be recovered, and the identity of the victim remains unknown.

According to eyewitnesses, the student had bet with his coursemates that he could swim across the river. As he attempted the feat, he disappeared beneath the water and has not resurfaced since.

“A 200-level Chemical Engineering student made a bet with his coursemates to swim across the river. They all contributed N300 each. Sadly, as he was swimming, he went under and hasn’t been seen since,” a student of the university told reporters.

Efforts to reach the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mercy Ekott, were unsuccessful as she did not respond to calls.

Bayelsa State Police spokesperson, Musa Mohammed, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident. “I have no information on the incident,” he said, adding that he would provide updates once available.

The tragic incident has raised concerns over safety and the dangers of risky dares among young people in the area.
