The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on NAFDAC to expedite its inspection and reopen the Ogbo-Ogwu market in Onitsha.

The measure, moved by Chief Tony Moubike representing Aguata Constituency Two during Tuesday’s plenary session, comes amid growing concerns over the market’s prolonged closure.

Chief Moubike warned that innocent traders and apprentices are suffering, with the risk that young apprentices might be lured into criminal activities if the closure continues. Speaker Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze also stressed that the ongoing verification exercise is causing undue hardship and urged a swift reopening.

The resolution follows NAFDAC’s major enforcement operation on 9 February 2024 at the market, during which large quantities of adulterated, substandard, and expired drugs—along with unwholesome food, cosmetics, and chemicals—were seized. NAFDAC has reiterated that such counterfeit products pose serious health risks and remains committed to protecting public health.
