20-room building razed in Kwara cooking gas fire incident

A 20-room lone-storey building has been ravaged by fire in Ilorin West Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The incident happened at 90 Koro Compound in the Oke-Apomu area of the Local Government after a gas cooker caught fire.

The Kwara State Fire Service, who confirmed the incident, said it happened on Wednesday.

It said household materials including beds, bedding, clothes and other utensils, were destroyed in the inferno.

A statement by the Head, Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, on Thursday, noted that firefighters attended to the incident promptly and professionally.

“The fire crew arrived to find several rooms engulfed in flames. Demonstrating exceptional skill and efficiency, the firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the fire. Out of the 20 rooms in the storey building, 13 were successfully saved, while seven were affected by the inferno.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by an unattended gas cooker,” he said.

Adekunle said the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, urged the public to prioritise fire safety at all times to prevent such incidents.

“The Kwara State Fire Service remains committed to safeguarding lives and property through proactive fire prevention and rapid emergency response”, he pledged.
