The World Bank has appointed Mathew Verghis as its new country director for Nigeria.
The appointment took effect on July 1, according to a statement released by the bank on Friday.
Verghis, an Indian economist, replaces Ndiame Diop, who has been reassigned within the institution.
The bank described Verghis as a seasoned development expert with more than two decades of global experience.
He joined the World Bank in 1999 and has served in various leadership positions across different continents.
His most recent role was as Regional Practice Director for Prosperity in South Asia, based in Washington, D.C.
Commenting on his appointment, Verghis said Nigeria stands at a defining moment in its development journey.
“I am honoured to take on this role and to work alongside the government and people of Nigeria,” he said.
“There is real potential for transformative growth that can improve lives, create jobs, and expand opportunities for all.”
He added, “I’m also excited to experience firsthand the rich culture and incredible energy of Nigeria.”
The World Bank said Verghis will oversee its operations in Nigeria, including the coordination of development projects and policy dialogue.
He will also deepen engagement with key stakeholders such as government agencies, civil society groups, and international partners.
Verghis holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Notre Dame in the United States.
He has published works on topics such as economic growth, poverty, public finance, and labour market reform.
