  • The SGF described the report linking him to party leadership race as false and misleading.
  • He insisted he will not abandon the responsibility assigned to him by the president.

The secretary to the government of the federation, Senator George Akume, has denied reports linking him to the race for the national chairmanship of the All Progressives Congress.

He described the speculation as “baseless and misleading”

In a statement issued by his special adviser on media and publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume said the report was a fabrication aimed at distracting him from his national duties.

“For the record, Senator Akume is not jostling with anyone for the post of either the APC national chairman or any other post in the party,” the statement read.

“His main focus is to ensure he does not in any way betray the intrinsic trust that President Tinubu reposes in him, especially in delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Speaking further, Akume said he remained committed to national service and had no ambition for any party leadership position.

“I am not in a hurry to abdicate my responsibility and the task that the president of the Federal Republic has placed before me,” he said.

“I am a firm believer in the principle that whatever God plans for you will surely come to pass. So I can’t be in a race that I am not interested in.”

He said the North-Central zone had capable leaders who could lead the APC if the position was zoned to the region.

He added that his current focus was on supporting the Tinubu administration in delivering good governance and real change to Nigerians.

The SGF’s office also urged journalists to adhere strictly to professional ethics, especially on politically sensitive matters.

“The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation is open to be contacted for verification of facts,” the statement added.
