- Tanker crash triggered by brake failure led to fire that razed two vehicles near Celica Junction on Ife-Ibadan Expressway.
- Quick response by state and federal fire services stopped spread of fire to nearby NNPC station and houses.
A petrol tanker, a Toyota Prado Jeep and another vehicle were razed in a fire accident at Celica Junction, along Ife-Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The incident involved a tanker loaded with 33,000 litres of premium motor spirit.
The general manager of the state’s fire service, Akinyemi Akinyinka, confirmed the incident.
Akinyinka said it occurred around 6:27pm on Thursday and was reported through a telephone call.
He said a crew of firemen led by ACFS Adeniyi Adesina was immediately deployed to the scene.
On arrival, they found the tanker and another vehicle already engulfed in flames.
He said, “The firemen swiftly swung into action by applying chemical foam compound and restricted the fire from spreading to the nearby NNPC petrol station and surrounding properties.”
He added that officers of the Federal Fire Service joined the effort to extinguish the blaze.
Akinyinka explained that the incident was caused by a brake failure which made the tanker lose control.
He said the truck hit a Toyota Prado Jeep and a car before falling and bursting into flames.
“No casualty was recorded but the fire affected the trailer tanker and a car, while a Jeep was hit by the trailer into the nearby gutter,” he said.
He said the NNPC station and other nearby properties were saved due to the swift response of firemen.
The senior adviser on fire reform and chairman of the state’s fire reform committee, Dr Maroof Akinwande, urged residents to go about their activities without panic.
He said, “The fire has been completely extinguished and the area is now safe.”
