  • Smaller drains across Lagos are being expanded to connect with large collectors for improved water management.
  • Wahab warned traders against undermining state’s infrastructure and flooding control plans with unregulated activity.

The Lagos State Government has warned traders to vacate bridge underpasses illegally turned into markets, citing safety and flood concerns.

The affected areas include the Idumagbo Bridge and Third Mainland Bridge, particularly around Oja Oba and Adeniji Adele.

The state said such locations would no longer be tolerated for trading as it intensifies efforts to reduce flooding through major drainage and infrastructure works.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, gave the warning during an inspection tour on Saturday, July 19, 2025.

He said the tour showed progress in ongoing flood control projects and stressed the need for public cooperation.

Wahab said the ongoing construction of the Onikoyi/Turnbull drainage collector, which will link Banana Island and Park View Estate, is a key part of the plan.

He added that several smaller drains are being expanded and connected to larger collectors to manage runoff in flood-prone areas like Banana Island.

The commissioner, however, raised concerns over renewed trading activities under cleared bridges, describing the trend as dangerous.

He said, “Let me make this clear: public safety must take precedence over informal trading.”

“These structures are not intended for market activity, they are critical flood control assets,” he added.

Wahab warned that illegal traders not only put themselves and others at risk but may blame government when disasters occur.

To curb the menace, the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, LASPARK, has approved plans to convert the affected zones into green spaces and regulated parks.

He stated that all unauthorised trading must cease immediately until the green space plans are implemented.

He added, “Lagos is committed to building systems that protect lives and property, but we cannot do it alone. Every resident must respect these efforts if we are to succeed.”
