- Edo police apprehended suspects on 15th August, recovering a silver Toyota Yaris and items linked to extortion and harassment.
- Members of the public encouraged to provide information to aid investigations and ensure justice is served.
The Edo state police command has taken a serving officer and three civilians into custody over allegations of extortion, armed robbery, and brutality in Benin.
CSP Moses Yamu, the command’s Public relations officer (PPRO), confirmed the arrests in a statement released on Sunday in Benin.
The arrests followed the circulation of a viral video in which a victim claimed policemen had abducted him, seized his belongings, and harassed him.
In response to the report, the state commissioner of police, Monday Agbonika, immediately ordered a full investigation and apprehension of those involved.
“On 15th August 2025, operatives of the Ugbowo Surveillance Team successfully intercepted the suspects with a silver-coloured Toyota Yaris and other incriminating items,” Yamu said.
“A police inspector, still in active service, was apprehended alongside three civilian accomplices for allegedly terrorising residents through harassment and extortion, the statement added.
Describing the matter as “shameful and criminal,” CP Agbonika promised the suspects would be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
“The command has zero tolerance for corruption, abuse of office, or misconduct within the Force,” Yamu quoted Agbonika as saying.
He added that “there will be no hiding place for rogue elements within the police, and any officer caught in extortion or brutality will be dismissed, arrested, and prosecuted.”
Yamu further called on the public, including the victim featured in the viral clip, to come forward with credible information to aid investigations.
The command reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property, restoring public confidence, and maintaining the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
