  • Ancient residential building and adjoining shop destroyed by flames before fire operatives curtailed further spread.

A residential building and a shop were on Thursday razed by fire at Atake, Adebo axis of Oja-Oba in the Iseyin area of Oyo state.

The chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr Moroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Ibadan on Friday.

Akinwande said the agency received a distress call around 4:04 p.m. from one Mrs Adegoke Anifat.

He explained that firefighters, led by ACFS Azeez Muritala, were immediately deployed to the scene.

On arrival, the operatives met an ancient residential building and an adjoining shop already engulfed in flames.

According to him, the personnel quickly swung into action and curtailed the inferno from spreading to other nearby structures.

He said no casualties were recorded in the incident.

However, he added that properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.

Akinwande attributed the cause of the fire to a power surge.

He advised residents to prioritise safety in their homes and workplaces.

The fire service boss also stressed the need for households and businesses to install fire extinguishers to reduce risks.
