  • Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the immediate dissolution of the implicated tactical squad, stressing a replacement team has already been constituted.
  • Hundeyin announced that the new squad would follow international policing standards while prioritising human rights and dignity in operations.

The commissioner of police in Lagos, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the detention of officers caught assaulting a motorist in a viral video.

The incident occurred during a stop-and-search operation on Friday and sparked widespread outrage after the footage circulated online.

In the clip, the officers were seen attempting to forcibly remove the motorist’s eyeglasses on suspicion that it contained a recording device.

The spokesperson of the Lagos police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the entire squad involved in the assault has been dissolved.

He explained that the commissioner had immediately constituted a new tactical team expected to “adhere strictly to international best practices in policing.”

Hundeyin added that the new squad would operate with “zero tolerance for corruption” and maintain “the highest standards of respect for human rights and dignity.”

“Following a thorough preliminary investigation, the commissioner of police, Lagos state command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered the immediate detention of the entire team,” Hundeyin wrote on X.

“The officers will face an orderly room trial in line with established disciplinary procedures to ensure justice is served swiftly and transparently,” he added.

The command said the newly created unit would replace the disbanded squad and would be closely monitored to ensure compliance with reforms.

Earlier, the police had described the assault as an isolated case, stressing that it did not reflect the values of the force.
