Former vice-chancellor of the Federal University, Gusau (FUGUS), Magaji Garba has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This development has been confirmed on Monday by Wilson Uwajuren, the spokesperson of the anti-graft agency, EFCC.

Garba was appointed vice-chancellor of FUGUS, Zamfara state, in 2016, and was succeeded by Mu’azu Gusau in December 2020.

NAN reported that a source at the anti-graft agency said Garba, sometime in 2018, allegedly obtained the sum of N260 million from Shehu Sambo, owner of Ministaco Nigeria Limited, to facilitate a contract.

Report revealed that the former VC collected the amount as payment for the award of a contract worth N3 billion for the construction of perimeter wall fence around the institution.

The deal was, however, said to have not gone through.

“The VC is still being grilled by investigators of the EFCC, who are interested in knowing what happened to the money, ” the source was quoted to have said.

However, the EFCC spokesman said the former VC was arrested on January 28 for questioning following a petition, but did not give further details on the case.

“Yes, the news is true. We arrested the vice-chancellor, Magaji Garba, on Thursday last week for questioning based on a petition and he’s still in our custody,” Uwajuren said.
