History accommodates all events. It does more than reflection, it exposes one to weakness of the past and allows one to be strengthened in the present owing to lessons acquired from the past.

In an effort to create awareness and enlighten our readers or preserve our memories as worthy citizens, WITHIN NIGERIA has highlighted four significant events that shaped March 7 in the history of this country, Nigeria.

Religious conflicts in Jos resulted in over 100 deaths, mostly women and children.

On this date, 7th of March in 2010, more than 100 people were killed near the Nigerian city of Jos, most of whom were reportedly women and children.

According to a government official, there has been an attack on Dogo Nahawa. Over a hundred people have been killed — most of them women and children,”

“Some of the children are less than one year old,” he said.

Boko Haram killed seven in Diffa, Niger

On this date, 7th of March in 2015, no fewer than seven soldiers were killed and approximately 20 more wounded when suspected Boko Haram militants attacked their position near Gueskerou (Diffa region, near the Nigerian border).

According to Nigerien authorities, the soldiers engaged the attackers and succeeded in driving them back, killing 19 militants and taking one captive. In addition, the military destroyed five of their vehicles and seized two more. Similar incidents are possible in Diffa region over the near term

Four bombs in Nigeria’s Maiduguri city killed at least 50

On this date, 7th of March in 2015, four bomb blasts killed at least 50 people in Maiduguri in Nigeria’s northeast on Saturday in the worst attacks there since Islamist militants tried to seize the city in two major assaults earlier this year.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the bombs, but they had the characteristics of the Islamist organization Boko Haram, which has been fighting for six years to establish an Islamic state in the largest economy in Africa.

Communal clashes claimed 20 lives in Kogi

On this date, 7th of March in 2019, the communal clashes between the people of Igburra Mozum and Bassa Kwomu in Bassa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi state claimed no fewer than 20 lives.

This came after five farmers were said to have been killed on Wednesday near Maiduguri in Borno State when their vehicle hit a landmine planted near a road.

The two communities in the last two years have been fighting a supremacy battle, which has claimed many lives with property worth several millions of naira destroyed.
