“When she lost her son last year, Amuri people came begging for her to come back to her husband so that her child would be buried in his father’s place. And that was how she went back.

“It was very unfortunate that after all the pleading, begging and kneeling down for forgiveness, this is the result. She used axe to kill the same woman she married and had children with.”

According to Ruth Chinweuba, few days later, they resumed their hostility. The husband allegedly went to the room where she was sleeping in the night and attacked her mercilessly with axe which led her to death after she had lost so much blood.

Expectedly, the heartbreaking death of Onyiyechi has sparked outrage and deep sorrow within the Amodu community. In response, the women of Amodu, hometown of the deceased have risen in unity, launching a movement to demand justice for their sister and to speak out against the growing menace of domestic violence.

Despite multiple attempts by certain individuals and authorities to stop them, the women remain steadfast and courageous. Their original plan was to march to the Nkanu West Local Government headquarters to make their voices heard, but they were reportedly denied entry and told not to approach the premises.

One of Amodu residents told our reporter that “this has left many wondering why should peaceful women seeking justice be silenced? What are they trying to hide? Why is there so much resistance to a simple, lawful call for justice?

“The Amodu women are not causing trouble; they are demanding accountability. They want justice for Onyiyechi a young woman whose life was cruelly cut short by the man who was meant to love and protect her.

“This movement is not just for Onyiyechi; it is for every woman who has suffered in silence, every life lost to domestic abuse, and every child left motherless because society often looks the other way.

Let the truth be told. Let justice be served. Let Onyiyechi’s voice echo through theirs.
