Who is Badaru Abubakar? Nigeria’s Defense Minister Who Recently Resigned

Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, the Minister of Defense appointed by President Tinubu on August 21, 2023, has resigned.


Abubakar, via a letter dated December 1 forwarded to President Tinubu, disclosed that he was quitting on health grounds.

According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President (Information and Strategy), President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation.

However, President Tinubu has forwarded the name of former Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa to the Senate as a replacement.

He is a native of Babura, Jigawa State.He attended Babura Central Primary School

He also attended Rumfa College in Kano

He graduated with a B.Sc. in Accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (1985)

He studied at the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru

He founded Talamiz Group, a conglomerate involved in automobiles, manufacturing, agriculture, and commodity distribution

He holds a leadership position in business groups like the Federation of West Africa Chambers of Commerce and Industry

He served as a governor of Jigawa State from 2015 till 2023

During his tenure as a governor, he focused on economic development, infrastructure, and others

He was appointed by President Bola Tinubu as Minister of Defence on the 21st of August, 2023

He resigned as a defense minister on December 1, 2025, citing health concerns

He is a Member of the Order of the Niger (MON, 2006)

He was honored with traditional titles like Sardaunan Ringim of the Ringim Emirate and Walin Jahun of the Dutse Emirate

He was the National President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA)

He also served as a Vice President II of the Federation of West Africa Chambers of Commerce and Industries

He is married with three wives and multiple children.
