Top movie producers Kunle Afolayan and Funke Akindele have disagreed over promotional and marketing strategies used for cinema movies in Nigeria.
Recall that Kunle Afolayan, a popular director and filmmaker, had commented on profit-making strategies and the N2 billion cinema gross, criticizing current marketing strategies embarked upon by Nigerian film producers.
Afolayan, while addressing a selected audience at the launching of the Netflix series debut ‘Anikulapo: The Ghoul Awakens,’ said there is no competition between us.
“I don’t just want N1 billion or N2 billion in the cinema that I won’t be able to personally receive N10 million from.
In a similar development, Kunle Afolayan, while answering why he does not collaborate with cinema, disclosed that he can only make a film if guaranteed that he does not have to dance to sell.
Afolayan, while speaking at the Lagos Business of Film Summit, added that there’s a need to come up with other strategies because film producers should be able to sell films without exhausting themselves.
“I don’t know how the likes of Funke Akindele and others are doing it. Creating skits every day, changing costumes at the time. “I can’t do it,” he further added.
Funke Akindele, a Nigerian actress and filmmaker, while reacting to Afolayan’s comment on her Instagram story, attributed the comment to jealousy.
She told him to create his own path.
“If you can’t beat them or join them, create your own path. Do not allow jealousy to burn you. The sky is so big for everybody to fly.” She encouraged him to explore alternative promotion strategies or hire a team to handle marketing, emphasizing faith in God’s plan and focusing on his own journey.
