11 Things You Might Not Know About Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, Chairman of State Police Committee

On March 4, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu formed an eight-person committee to oversee the deployment of state police. 


Recall that President Bola Tinubu already directed Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to convene a committee to oversee state police operations.

Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has appointed Professor Olu Ogunsakin as chairman of the state police committee of eight members, with Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni serving as secretary.

While speaking at the inauguration ceremony, IGP Tunji Disu hailed the committee’s mission as “significant and timely.”

He emphasized that it addresses the growing demand for stronger internal security and community-responsive police.

“It is my greatest privilege to formally inaugurate this committee on state policing. The task before this committee is both significant and timely, as it speaks directly to the demand to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security and ensure that policing remains responsive to the realities of our communities. ”Disu said.

Some crime experts have continued to criticize and express worries about the implementation of state police.

These experts criticized and expressed concerns about a variety of issues, including ethnic and regional tensions, power abuse, impunity, overlapping duties with federal police, insufficient resources, and the potential for instability to escalate if not controlled correctly.

However, some Nigerians have expressed confidence in the state police committee, which is capably chaired by Professor Olu Ogunsakin. They contended that the committee chair has a high profile and may contribute to the true implementation of state police in the country.

Here are 11 facts you probably didn’t know about Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, chairman of the State Police Committee:

He is a native of Ilesa.

He is a renowned expert in police studies with impressive credentials.

He holds a PhD in Police Studies from the University of Exeter, UK.

He attended the University of Detroit, Michigan (USA), where he earned an MA in Criminal Justice.

He attended the University of Toronto, Canada, where he earned a PGC in Public Mediation.

He attended the University of Detroit, Michigan, USA, where he obtained a BSc in Human Resources Development.

He has worked with top law enforcement agencies globally, including Interpol, the Serious Organised Crime Agency UK, and the National Crime Squad UK.

Notably, he was appointed Senior Adviser to the City of London Police and the Police Authority in 2001.

His contributions to UK policing were recognized by the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs in 2010.

Currently, Professor Ogunsakin is the Director of the National Institute for Police Studies, an affiliate of the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano.

He’s also a technical adviser to the inspector general of police, Nigeria Police Force.
