A viral image circulating on Facebook claims that a United States pilot has been arrested and is being detained in an Iranian cell. The image, posted by a Facebook user, had garnered 66 likes, 45 comments, and 7 shares as of April 6, 2026.

The Facebook user said an American pilot is being detained in an Iranian cell after ejecting from a fighter jet, adding that this is the “first hostage in this war”. This claim was also posted by another Facebook user here. The image also appeared on X and TikTok

Tension in the Middle East escalated on February 28, 2026, when US and Israeli forces launched coordinated airstrikes targeting Iran’s military and major facilities. Iran responded immediately with missile and drone attacks across the region, leading to a wider conflict. The conflict continued to expand with the reported closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, and the consistent show of force by the US and Israel.

On April 3, 2026, a US F-15E Strike Eagle jet operating as part of ongoing U.S combat operations was reportedly shot down by the Iranian military in its airspace, which led to a wide search and rescue operation by the U.S.

The image posted by Facebook users claiming that the crew member who was ejected from the fighter jet has been detained by the Iranian military is important to investigate, as it can influence public perception and international reactions in this ongoing conflict.

Verification

To check if the image has appeared online, Within Nigeria subjected it to a reverse image search. The search, however, shows that this image was recently posted across all social media platforms.

We went on to check several X accounts used by Iran to communicate about the ongoing conflict (https://x.com/Iran_UN, https://x.com/araghchi, https://x.com/IrnaEnglish, https://x.com/Iran_GOV, https://x.com/IRIMFA_EN, https://x.com/IRIMFA_EN, https://x.com/khamenei_ir), and did not see anything related to the claim.

A check through various international media organisations that have been actively reporting about this conflict revealed that on April 3, 2026, Iran shot down the US F-15E Strike Eagle jet involved in combat operations in Iran.

This led to the ejection of two US military personnel. While one was rescued on that day by U.S forces, the other, a weapons systems officer, took 48 hours to be rescued. This was also confirmed by U.S. President Donald Trump on X. There are no official reports of a U.S. soldier from the destroyed fighter jet being captured by the Iranian military.

Within Nigeria further subjected the image to imagewhisperer.org, an AI image verification tool. Findings revealed that the image is AI-generated.

Veridict

The claim that a U.S. soldier is being detained by Iranian military in the ongoing conflict is false. Official reports, including verified news organisations, confirmed that the two soldiers onboard the US F-15E Strike Eagle jet were rescued.
