FACT-CHECK: Did Youths Attack Federal Lawmaker For Defecting to APC in Zamfara?

CLAIM

Facebook posts alleged that a viral video shows a federal lawmaker being attacked in Zamfara after defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

BACKGROUND

As the 2027 general election approaches, political defections have increased.

Notably, on March 31, 2026, House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas announced that 27 lawmakers had defected to the ruling APC and the African Democratic Congress.

Subsequently, multiple Facebook pages circulated a video purporting to show a PDP federal lawmaker attacked in Zamfara after defecting to the APC and endorsing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.

The video depicts a crowd stoning a man while police attempt to intervene.

VERIFICATION

However, when our team conducted a Google reverse image search, we found the video first surfaced online in December 2025 — months before the announced defections.

Furthermore, the individual in the video was identified as Kabiru Mikailu, a member of the Zamfara State House of Assembly representing Maru South constituency, not a federal lawmaker.

In addition, reports indicate residents of Dansadau town attacked him over alleged “poor performance” in office.

Lastly, as of this report, Mikailu remains a member of the PDP and has not defected to the APC.

VERDICT

Therefore, the claim is false, misleading, and untrue.

While the video itself is authentic, it has been taken out of context: it shows a state lawmaker being confronted by constituents over performance issues, not a federal lawmaker attacked for defecting to the APC.
