Beyond music: Why Davido is returning to school for politics & family legacy
SHARE

For more than a decade, David Adeleke, better known as Davido, has dominated music stages around the world, helping push Afrobeats to global audiences. But recently, the superstar seems to be looking beyond music and fame toward education, leadership, and possibly politics.

These days, the conversation is no longer only about hit songs and sold-out concerts. It is also about family legacy, influence, and carrying forward the Adeleke name, a family long connected to power and politics in Nigeria.

For the Adeleke family, leadership and public service have always been part of who they are. Davido may have built his name through music, but by returning to school to study governance, he appears to be preparing for something bigger. He seeks to learn how power and leadership truly work so he can one day speak for the youths of Osun with both knowledge and family legacy behind him.

Davido’s Political Roots Run Deep

Davido

Long before Davido became one of Africa’s biggest music stars, the Adeleke name already carried weight in Nigerian politics and business circles.

Politics, in many ways, was part of the environment he grew up in. The roots of the family’s influence stretch back decades to the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, popularly known as “Serubawon,” who made history as the first civilian governor of Osun State in 1992 before later serving twice in the Nigerian Senate. Even before that, the family already had political links through Davido’s grandfather, Raji Ayoola Adeleke, who was also a senator.

Today, that political legacy continues through Governor Ademola Adeleke, Davido’s uncle, whose rise from senator to Osun governor kept the family firmly in Nigeria’s political conversation. His 2022 governorship victory did not just strengthen the Adeleke political structure in Osun; it also pushed Davido deeper into public political engagement than ever before.

But the Adeleke influence is not built on politics alone.

Davido’s father, Adedeji Adeleke, is one of Nigeria’s most powerful businessmen, with interests spanning energy, logistics, education and infrastructure through Pacific Holdings and Adeleke University. Over the years, the family has built a rare blend of political access, business wealth and celebrity influence that few Nigerian families can match.

That is why Davido’s growing interest in politics feels different from the usual celebrity activism.

He is not coming into politics as someone trying to force his way into powerful circles. He grew up around election campaigns, political meetings, influential figures, and discussions about governance long before music made him famous. While the world came to know him as a global music star, the environment he was raised in had always stretched far beyond entertainment.

The Campaigner Nigerians Have Been Watching

Davido in Osun State

By the time many Nigerians began seeing Davido as more than a musician during the 2022 Osun governorship election, he had already been politically active for years. What changed was how visible and impossible to ignore his involvement became.

During the 2018 Osun governorship race, Davido openly threw his celebrity weight behind Ademola Adeleke’s first bid for governor. He appeared at rallies across the state, drew massive crowds and repeatedly used his social media platforms to campaign for his uncle. Videos from the period showed supporters swarming campaign grounds not just for the politician, but also for the superstar campaigning beside him. But it was the 2022 election that truly revealed the scale of Davido’s political influence.

As Ademola Adeleke prepared for a rematch against then-governor Gboyega Oyetola, Davido became one of the most visible faces of the campaign. Reports at the time said he temporarily slowed down music activities and spent extended periods in Osun State mobilising support for the PDP candidate.

He was everywhere from campaign stages, convoys, and online spaces to voting conversations. On X, Instagram and other platforms, Davido constantly pushed political messaging to millions of followers, blending his celebrity status with grassroots mobilisation in a way few Nigerian entertainers had done before. Young voters especially gravitated toward the movement, with many seeing him not just as an artist supporting family, but as someone emotionally invested in the outcome.

When Adeleke eventually won the election in July 2022, Davido’s reaction felt deeply personal. He later said he campaigned “vigorously” because family meant everything to him and because he believed they were “the best people for the job.”

That moment mattered beyond Osun politics. It also showed how celebrity influence, youth culture, and social media mobilisation are changing the way Nigerians engage with politics. More importantly, it made one thing clear: Davido was not just occasionally speaking about politics from the sidelines. He had already become a major part of the political conversation itself.

Why the Political Science Degree Matters

Davido

For someone who has already conquered music at the highest level, Davido’s decision to return to school has raised an interesting question: what exactly is he preparing for?

The singer recently revealed plans to pursue a one-year Master’s degree in Political Science in the United Kingdom, making it clear that the move was intentional and directly tied to his growing interest in governance and political engagement. During a livestream, Davido explained that he already holds a Bachelor’s degree and wants to further his education abroad.

On its own, the announcement may have seemed ordinary. But when placed beside his growing involvement in politics in Osun State, the timing feels far more meaningful.

In the same period, Davido announced that he was temporarily putting music aside to focus on the re-election campaign of Governor Ademola Adeleke ahead of the 2026 governorship election. Speaking during the inauguration of the Imole Youth Campaign Mobilisation Team in Ede on May 5, the singer said he was dedicating two months fully to grassroots mobilisation across Osun State because “the job is not done.” He also urged supporters to embark on door-to-door engagement across local governments while promoting the governor’s achievements to voters.

That statement revealed that Davido no longer talks about politics like a celebrity reacting from a distance during election periods. The way he speaks now sounds more like someone trying to understand leadership, political structure, voter engagement, and governance itself.

The campaigns around him appear more organised, his involvement looks more intentional, and even his recent role in youth mobilisation within the political movement in Osun State points to that growing shift. And perhaps that is where the Political Science degree matters most.

In Nigeria, celebrities often shape political conversations through endorsements, activism, or social media reactions. But Davido seems to be moving toward something deeper by combining his influence with formal education. Fame may open political doors, but knowledge and understanding are what help people remain relevant inside those spaces.

For years, his celebrity status gave him access to powerful political circles. Now, he appears more interested in understanding how the system truly works, not just supporting campaigns from the outside. Whether the pause from music lasts two months or much longer, the shift in Davido’s priorities is becoming harder to ignore.

Recently, the singer has spoken more openly about family responsibilities, business interests, politics and now education. These conversations rarely dominated his public image during the peak of his early career. At 33, Davido is no longer just the energetic pop star chasing global hits. He is also a husband, father, businessman and increasingly, a political figure tied to one of Nigeria’s most influential families.

That does not necessarily mean he is preparing to walk away from music. But it does suggest he may be preparing for something bigger than music alone.

For many artists, fame is the final destination. For Davido, it increasingly looks like a platform for whatever comes next. Which must be why during a livestream with Davrel, he said:

“If I ever decide to work in government, I would still be performing. I don’t think that stops anything.
“Obviously, it won’t be as much as before.
Michel Martelly was a musician while he was president of Haiti, and he still performed. He even went on tours during his presidential vacations.”

Nigerian Celebrities and Political Influence

Davido

In today’s Nigeria, celebrities do more than entertain. They influence conversations, shape public opinion, and help drive political discussions online.

From election campaigns to protest movements like #EndSARS, entertainers now reach young Nigerians in ways many politicians cannot. Social media has made celebrity influence a powerful political tool.

But Davido’s case feels different because, for him, politics is personal. His family is deeply involved in politics, his name is already tied to a major political structure, and his influence among young Nigerians is huge. That is why the political movement around Ademola Adeleke appointed him to help lead youth mobilisation ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

With millions of followers and strong youth appeal, Davido already has the attention many politicians desperately want. And in today’s digital age, attention can quickly turn into political support.

Conclusion

Whether Davido eventually contests for office or simply remains a powerful political voice, one thing is becoming clear: he is thinking beyond hit songs and sold-out arenas.

The signs are already there — the Political Science master’s degree in the UK, the growing involvement in Osun politics, the formal campaign roles and the decision to temporarily step away from music to focus on mobilisation efforts.

And perhaps that is the bigger story behind this new chapter.

Long after the concerts end and the charts change, Davido may be trying to secure something more permanent — a seat in a legacy that stretches far beyond music.
