The federal government laptop loan scheme Nigerians have been asking about since May is finally live, and the online form is shorter than most people expected.

CREDICORP, the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation, opened applications this week for the Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices Programme, known everywhere already by its acronym: C.L.I.C.K.D. The scheme lets eligible Nigerians pay for laptops, smartphones and tablets in instalments instead of raising the full cost upfront, and it was unveiled in Abuja by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani, alongside CREDICORP’s Managing Director and CEO, Uzoma Nwagba.

Here’s the catch nobody’s headline mentions clearly enough: this isn’t open to every Nigerian yet. Not even close.

What C.L.I.C.K.D. actually is

Strip away the acronym, and it’s a government-backed hire-purchase arrangement for digital devices. Instead of walking into a shop and paying N400,000 for a laptop in one go, a qualifying applicant pays in structured instalments over time. CREDICORP is prioritising locally assembled laptops first, which lines up with the government’s push to support Nigeria’s own device manufacturers rather than funnel every naira toward imported hardware.

The programme sits under the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and is being run day-to-day by CREDICORP. The pitch is straightforward: young Nigerians building careers in tech, remote work, freelancing and the digital economy often hit the same wall, they need a decent laptop to work, learn or apply for jobs, but can’t afford one outright. C.L.I.C.K.D. is meant to remove that wall, gradually.

Who can actually apply right now?

This is where a lot of the excitement online has gotten ahead of the facts. The pilot phase is not a nationwide free-for-all. Only 1,000 laptops are available at this stage, and they’re reserved for fellows of the Federal Government’s Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) Programme.

If you’re not a 3MTT fellow, the honest answer is: you can’t get a device through this round. CREDICORP has already distributed devices to 77 beneficiaries in Abuja, with the rest going out to qualified fellows in other states in phases.

That said, the application portal quietly lists several other digital training programmes alongside 3MTT, which has fuelled speculation that the scheme could widen soon:

  • Andela Learning Community
  • Learn2Earn
  • ALX
  • HNG Internship
  • AltSchool Africa
  • Genesys Tech Hub

CREDICORP hasn’t confirmed whether members of these programmes will be admitted in a later phase. For now, treat their presence on the form as a hint, not a promise.

Federal government laptop loan requirements: what the form asks for

Applicants fill in the form at CREDICORP’s official C.L.I.C.K.D. portal, and it covers six broad areas:

1. State of residence. You select your state from the 36, or the FCT. CREDICORP says this helps it profile applicants and manage the rollout across the country.

2. Employment status. The form offers six categories: salary earner, freelancer or self-employed, business owner, student, job seeker, or NYSC member. There’s also an optional field for monthly income, with brackets running from under N100,000 to more than N1 million.

3. Proof of enrolment in an eligible digital skills programme. As it stands, that means 3MTT. The other programmes listed above may follow.

4. Device choice and intended use. You pick a laptop, smartphone or tablet, then explain what you’ll use it for, learning or professional certification, remote work, freelancing, software development, business expansion, content creation, or school. Multiple reasons can be selected.

5. Consent to verification. Applicants confirm their details are accurate and authorise CREDICORP and its partners to verify the information before approving the credit facility.

6. How you heard about the programme. Options range from 3MTT itself to social media, a friend or family member, school, employer, Google Search, or “other.”

How to apply for the FG laptop loan

The process itself takes a few minutes:

  1. Go to credicorp.ng/clickd, the official landing page.
  2. Click “I’m Interested.”
  3. Fill in your state, employment details, digital skills programme, device preference and intended use.
  4. Confirm your information and consent to verification.
  5. Submit and wait to be contacted for the next steps.

There’s no mention anywhere of a fee to apply, so treat any site or agent asking for payment “to process” your application as a red flag.

The part nobody has answers to yet

Here’s what’s genuinely unclear, and worth saying plainly rather than glossing over: CREDICORP has not disclosed the interest rate, the repayment period, the monthly repayment amount, or whether beneficiaries will need to make a down payment before collecting a device. Anyone telling you exact numbers right now is guessing. The agency has said more detail will come as the programme expands, which in government-speak usually means “check back later.”

What we do know is the repayment obligation is real; successful applicants sign up to repay based on agreed terms; this isn’t a grant. If the terms matter to your budget, and they should, it’s worth waiting for CREDICORP to publish them before assuming this is free money.

Why the government is doing this

Beyond the obvious goal of getting more laptops into more hands, officials are framing C.L.I.C.K.D. as digital-inclusion policy. The stated aims include improving access to devices for young Nigerians, helping more people build tech skills, expanding remote work opportunities, supporting freelancers and digital entrepreneurs, and pushing participation in Nigeria’s digital economy more broadly.

There’s also an industrial angle that’s easy to miss in the coverage. By starting with locally assembled laptops, CREDICORP is nudging demand toward Nigerian device manufacturers rather than just subsidising imports. Whether that holds as the programme scales to smartphones and tablets remains to be seen.
