On August 13, 2003, Nigerian veterinary authorities confirmed the detection of a highly pathogenic strain of avian influenza following outbreaks in poultry farms across northern Nigeria this month.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security disclosed that laboratory testing identified the virus as a new genotype of Goose/Guangdong-lineage HPAI H5N1, designated EA-2024-DV.

According to researchers, the strain represents “a major shift in the circulating virus population” in West Africa.

Initial cases were traced to commercial and backyard poultry farms in Kano, Katsina, Gombe and Kebbi states, but affected farms reported sudden mortality in chickens, turkeys and guinea fowl, with respiratory distress and diarrhea preceding deaths — a pattern consistent with previous HPAI outbreaks.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, working with state veterinary services, activated stamping-out protocols, movement restrictions for poultry and poultry products, and enhanced surveillance in live bird markets.

“Our surveillance teams are monitoring farm workers and market handlers as a precaution,” a senior official at the Ministry said.

Adebiyi Adegboye Adesida Afunbiowo II was named Deji of Akure

On August 13, 2003, Prince Adebiyi Adegboye Adesida Afunbiowo II was formally chosen as the new Deji of Akure, the Ondo State capital, following the conclusion of traditional rites by the kingmakers of the Osupa ruling house.

The announcement was made at the Odiba Palace after days of consultations, prayers, and divination.

The Osupa ruling house, one of the ruling houses entitled to present a candidate to the throne, put forward Prince Adebiyi Adegboye Adesida Afunbiowo II as its nominee.

According to palace tradition, the name Adesida Afunbiowo links the new monarch to the historic Adesida lineage that has produced several Dejis who shaped modern Akure.

Kingmakers further disclosed that the selection followed due process in line with the Chiefs Law of Ondo State and the customs governing the Deji stool.

Community leaders described the choice as “a unifying one” for Akure, noting the new Deji’s reputation for scholarship, community service, and commitment to Yoruba heritage.
