Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke, has been elected for a second term in office after winning Saturday’s governorship election in the South West state.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke winner of the keenly contested election after defeating his main rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adeleke, who was elected on the platform of the Accord Party, garnered 511,067 votes to edge out Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes, winning by a margin of 67,244 votes.
The State Returning Officer Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, VC, Federal University, Oye Ekiti, who announced the result, disclosed that Adeleke won 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas. At the same time, Oyebamiji secured the highest votes in the remaining 11.
African Democratic Congress candidate Najeem Salaam came distant third with 16,513 votes, while the remaining political parties shared the other valid votes recorded in the election.
Ogunwole declared Adeleke elected after determining that he had received the highest number of votes and met the constitutional requirement for geographical spread.
The declaration followed the collation of results from the 30 local government areas at the state collation centre in Osogbo.
Adeleke, who first became governor after winning the 2022 election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, will now serve a second term under the Accord Party.
His victory marks the Accord Party’s first governorship election win in Osun State.
