The Dagestani welterweight champion walked out of Xfinity Mobile Arena on Saturday night with his title still around his waist and a new line in the UFC record books next to his name. His unanimous decision win over Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330 was his 17th straight victory inside the Octagon, breaking the record of 16 that had stood since Anderson Silva’s middleweight reign more than a decade ago.

It wasn’t easy. It wasn’t even close to easy. But Makhachev got it done, and that has been the story of his career for almost eleven years now.

How the Fight Played Out

Makhachev came out exactly the way people expected him to: patient, heavy-handed in the clinch, and hunting for a takedown from the opening bell. He got one inside the first two minutes of round one, setting the tone early and controlling Garry on the mat for long stretches.

Round two belonged to Makhachev even more emphatically. As Garry tried to exit a clinch exchange, the champion caught him clean with a head kick and put him on the canvas, a moment that had the Philadelphia crowd on its feet and briefly looked like it might end the fight outright.

Then Garry did what he’s built a career on doing, he adjusted.

By round three, the challenger had found his rhythm. He started timing Makhachev’s entries, cracking him with hard body kicks and chopping away at his lead leg with sharp calf kicks. For a stretch, Garry was doing the one thing very few fighters have managed against Makhachev in recent years: making him uncomfortable. He stuffed takedown attempts, landed clean in close, and turned what looked like a routine title defense into a genuine fight.

It wasn’t enough to flip the scorecards. Heading into the championship rounds, Makhachev reached back into his grappling arsenal, found the takedown he needed, and took Garry’s back to shut the door on any late comeback. When the judges’ scores were read, 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47, there was no real controversy. Makhachev had done just enough, on a night when “just enough” was harder to find than usual.

A Record Eleven Years in the Making

Makhachev’s only career loss came all the way back in 2015, in just his second fight inside the UFC. Everything since then has been a straight line upward: a dominant run through the lightweight division, a title win over Charles Oliveira, a move up to welterweight, and a decision victory over Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322 that made him a two-division champion.

Saturday’s win pushed his record to 29-1 and made him the fifth fighter in UFC history to successfully defend titles in two separate weight classes. Anderson Silva’s 16-fight streak, built during his era of dominance atop the middleweight division, had stood as the promotion’s benchmark for consistency for years. It no longer does.

Reaction inside the sport was immediate. Fighters and analysts flooded social media praising Makhachev’s composure under pressure, while several noted that Garry’s improved striking in the second half of the fight suggested the young Irishman is closer to elite than his current record shows.

Rest of the Card

The co-main event saw women’s strawweight champion Mackenzie Dern cruise to her first successful title defense, dominating Gillian Robertson across five rounds. Robertson spent much of the fight defending against Dern’s relentless grappling and submission attempts, unable to generate meaningful offense of her own. The judges scored it lopsidedly in Dern’s favor.

Elsewhere on the main card, Jalin Turner needed just 39 seconds to finish Kaue Fernandes by first-round knockout, while Dustin Stoltzfus submitted Mansur Abdul-Malik via rear-naked choke in the second round. Esteban Ribovics stopped Edson Barboza on strikes in round two, a result that prompted Barboza, one of the sport’s most respected veterans, to announce his retirement from competition after the fight.

What’s Next for Makhachev

With the record now his, the obvious question turns to what comes next for the pound-for-pound king. Makhachev has already conquered two divisions, and speculation about a potential third title run, or a superfight against one of the UFC’s other dominant champions, is likely to dominate MMA headlines in the coming weeks.

For now, though, Saturday night belongs to him. Seventeen fights, one loss, eleven years, and a record that once looked untouchable, gone.
