On August 22, 2015, two Nigerian soldiers were killed after their patrol vehicle struck a landmine suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram insurgents along a major route into Dikwa, Borno State.
Military sources said the troops were on a clearance operation when the improvised explosive device detonated in the late afternoon. The blast destroyed the vehicle and killed both personnel instantly.
“They were carrying out routine operations to secure communities around Dikwa when the IED went off,” a senior officer at the Theater Command said. “It was a tragic loss. Our thoughts are with their families.”
Dikwa, about 90km east of Maiduguri, has been repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram since 2014. Residents said the explosion caused panic in nearby villages, with many recalling similar attacks on civilian and military convoys over the past year.
