OBITUARY: Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ – Movie Star Who Faced Pain With Courage and Left a Legacy

At the age of 66, legendary Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as “Ogogo,” has completed his life’s journey. Though his passing is painful, it reminds us that every beginning has an end. He won the battle against ulcer, but lost the war against cancer.

He was a man shaped by fate and circumstance. While most learned to run from pain, he learned to live with it. For 10 years, the Ilaro-born Nollywood actor endured severe ulcers: extreme weight loss, bouts of vomiting blood, nights of unrelenting pain. He survived. He came back to the screen. And he left behind a legacy stamped with resilience and endurance.

Taiwo Hassan was more than an actor. He was an institution in the Yoruba film industry. Active, versatile, and accessible, he stood for craft over clout and excellence over mediocrity. He mentored young actors who went on to prominence, and he modeled integrity for countless others who never had formal training. He chose morality over immorality, and he carried a clean record in the court of public opinion. He was more than a veteran. He was a standard.

The screens are dimmer today. A nollywood giant is gone. Every lover of art is grieving tonight. Taiwo Hassan “Ogogo” was a quiet colossus. He walked into our living rooms and appeared on our screens as an authority: a stern father, a shrewd chief, a principled officer, a husband of principle, a neighbor who would not cosign mediocrity. He held those characters for decades without flinching, and in the process he taught generations what integrity looked like. He was more than an actor. He was a voice for Yoruba heritage, and a standard-bearer for the craft.

An Ewi chanter per excellence. He was no noisemaker. He was not loud, but his works were making noise. From Owo Blow to Atitebi to Agbelebu to Ekun-Ayo to Iyawo Elele to Elewon, it was a hit back to back. He excelled on stage, gained prominence with celluloid and home videos and became an international star on Netflix. In an industry that often rewards noise, Ogogo chose substance.

Nollywood runs on volume — big emotions, big gestures, big drama. Ogogo chose a different frequency: restraint. He led with his eyes. You believed him because he first believed the role.

He came from a generation that treated acting as a craft, not content. Four takes not for the camera, but for the truth of the scene. Mentorship between shots, never for the feed. It’s the kind of legacy that doesn’t trend. It endures.

Off camera, the stories are the same: humble, disciplined, grounded. A family man. A Yoruba son who wore his culture with pride, never as a costume. In an era where fame spoils people fast, Ogogo stayed reachable. The crew will tell you he knows your name. He came early. He honored the script. For a generation of young actors, he was proof — you could win in Nollywood without losing yourself.

We’re in a Nollywood renaissance now. Netflix deals. Full cinemas. Global awards. But as we reach for what’s next, we must remember the foundation. Actors like Taiwo Hassan Ogogo weren’t just in the foundation — they were the bricks. They earned the audience’s trust in Nigerian stories. They proved our accents, our proverbs, our family politics could carry a film.  Without them, there is no “global Nollywood” to talk about today.

His death should remind the Nigerian industry of one thing: honor your own while they can still hear you. Record their stories. Give them their flowers. Once the lights go out, only the films and the memories remain. Taiwo Hassan “Ogogo” was not just a performer. He was a legend. A colossus. A standard. The grim reaper claimed his body, but not his legacy. To father children and to leave work that endures is to defeat death. That is immortality. As Taiwo Hassan “Ogogo” takes his final bow, we remember a man who stood firm to the end. The Ilaro guy who never loose guard.
