From Wetin Dey to Afamefuna: 10 things you might not know about Moc Madu, Ruby Orjiakor’s husband at 40
SHARE

For many Nollywood viewers, Moc Madu is a familiar face. He has appeared in films that have brought him closer to the mainstream, while his marriage to actress Ruby Orjiakor has given audiences another reason to pay attention to the actor.

But behind the recognition is a journey that began long before the wedding ceremonies, red carpets and bigger film roles.

As Madu turns 40 on September 2, 2026, his story offers a look at an actor whose path into Nollywood was shaped by persistence, rejection, work behind the camera and a willingness to start from wherever an opportunity presented itself.

Here are 10 things you might not know about the actor.

Moc Madu

1. He was born in Sokoto but has roots in Anambra

Moc Oge Madu was born on September 2, 1986, in Sokoto State. Although he was born in the north, Madu is an indigene of Ezele Oba in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. His connection to his Anambra roots is also reflected in the nickname he is popularly known by “Onwa Idemili.”

He spent much of his early life in Abuja, where he completed his primary and secondary education before eventually pursuing a career in the film industry. That journey, however, did not begin with him immediately becoming the actor audiences know today.

2. He once wanted to become a medical doctor

Acting may have eventually become his profession, but it was not his childhood dream. In a 2024 interview, Madu revealed that becoming a medical doctor was his number-one ambition while growing up.

His childhood, however, was not without difficulties. He said he lost his father shortly before he got to JSS3, a period he described as particularly difficult for his family.

The change in his circumstances meant moving from a private secondary school to a government school. At one point, he also had to hawk on the street while growing up.

3. Before acting, he worked behind the scenes

Moc Madu

Madu did not walk straight into Nollywood as a leading man. While growing up in Abuja and trying to get closer to the film environment, he started working as a crew member. The experience eventually became an important part of his career.

Before he became known primarily as an actor, Madu worked as a light man, boom swing and production assistant on film projects.

4. His journey to Lagos involved Kaduna

One of the more remarkable parts of Madu’s story is how he eventually found his way to Lagos. In 2011, he left Abuja for Kaduna to work with filmmaker Toka McBaror on a movie project.

After completing the project, however, he did not return to Abuja. Instead, he took the next available bus to Lagos, even though he did not know anyone in the city.

He had already searched online for PEFTI Film Institute, and he saw the school as a possible landing point where he could study, have accommodation for a while and continue pursuing acting.

It was a major gamble. But that decision put him in the city where his professional acting career would eventually take shape.

5. He studied cinematography while chasing acting roles

After arriving in Lagos, Madu enrolled at PEFTI Film Institute, where he studied cinematography. While studying, he was also attending acting auditions and looking for opportunities to get on screen.

That eventually paid off when he got opportunities to feature in Papa Ajasco and Super Story, productions associated with Wale Adenuga, who also owns PEFTI. The experience gave him an opportunity to move from the crew side of filmmaking to acting.

6. His professional acting career took off in 2015

Madu has consistently identified 2015 as the year he started acting professionally. A major turning point came when he successfully passed the M-Net audition in Lagos. That led to his appearance in the television series Hotel Majestic in 2015.

From working behind the scenes to attending auditions and taking smaller opportunities, Madu was gradually building the career he had left Abuja to pursue.

7. Afamefuna gave him one of his defining roles

By the time Madu appeared in the Netflix film Afàméfùnà, he had already spent years working his way through Nollywood.

But his role as adult Chike became an important point in his career. One thing that made the role particularly significant was that Madu spoke Igbo throughout his scenes.

In the 2024 interview, he described working with actors including Alexx Ekubo, Stan Nze and Kanayo O. Kanayo, alongside director Kayode Kasum, as a memorable experience.

8. He is married to fellow actor Ruby Orjiakor

Madu’s career may have introduced him to audiences, but his relationship with Ruby Orjiakor brought a new level of public attention.

The pair met while working on a movie in Anambra State, where they played lovers on screen. The professional relationship gradually developed into a romantic relationship that remained relatively private for some time.

Then, on January 29, 2025, Madu proposed to Ruby in a surprise setting decorated with red rose petals and balloons.

On February 1, 2025, they held their traditional marriage ceremony in Ruby’s hometown in Imo State. Their white wedding followed on May 31, 2025, in Asaba, Delta State.

9. Moc Madu & Ruby have a son

On March 26, 2026, Madu and Ruby announced the arrival of their first child together, a baby boy named Lotanna Haziel Madu, whom they also referred to as “Akuabata” and “Enyi Nnaya.”

10. Moc Madu clocks 40

The actor clocked 40 on Wednesday, September 2, 2026. He and his wife shared photos of him in a blue tailored suit with white fur lapel. He paired it with a white cap and matching shoes. He captioned his post:

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO МЕ!!!

Today, I give all the glory and praise to my Heavenly Father for bringing me into this beautiful new season of my life.

I’m deeply grateful for every blessing, every opportunity, every lesson, and every moment that has brought me this far. Lord, You have blessed me with my beautiful Wife @ruby_ojiakor and my lovely Children and my awesome family and some of the greatest gifts life could offer, and I know You are not finished with me yet. The best is still ahead.

This journey has taught me so much. I’ve faced battles, heard the noise, endured trials and tribulations, walked through moments that tested my strength, and yet, through it all, You gave me victory. What was meant to break me became part of my testimony. What looked like setbacks became stepping stones.

Today, I celebrate not just another year, but another chapter of God’s faithfulness. I celebrate growth. I celebrate grace. I celebrate survival, strength, purpose, and the beautiful journey ahead.

As I step into this new season, I surrender it all to You, Lord. May my life continue to be a testimony of Your goodness. May my steps be ordered, my purpose fulfilled, my family blessed, and my heart remain grateful.

THIS NEW SEASON IS TO YOUR GLORY, HEAVENLY FATHER.
THE GLORY IS YOURS FOREVER. AMEN!

Happy Birthday to me!
Cheers to another year of Grace, Growth, Greatness and God’s unfailing love.”
