Want to be successful? Mr Eazi says young people need these 3 things
SHARE

Success is often linked to talent, money, connections and opportunities. But for Nigerian singer and entrepreneur Mr Eazi, the things that help a young person succeed go beyond what can be seen from the outside.

During a recent street interview, the singer offered an unexpected answer when asked about what contributes to success. His response immediately brought marriage into the conversation, before he went on to name three qualities he believes young people need on their journey.

For Mr Eazi, the road to success requires more than ambition. It also demands the ability to stay focused, wait for results and hold on to one’s values.

The surprising advice: “Marry a good wife”

Mr Eazi’s first answer was perhaps the one many people did not expect. While walking with his wife, Temi Otedola, the singer was asked about an important character trait or principle that can contribute to success. His response was simple:

“Marry a good wife.”

The comment stood out because, rather than immediately mentioning hard work, talent or money, Mr Eazi pointed to the importance of choosing the right partner. The moment also came in the presence of Temi, whom he married in 2025 after several years together.

However, the singer did not stop at marriage. He went on to give a more direct answer when asked what young people, particularly those under 25, should focus on as they pursue success.

1. Discipline

The first quality Mr Eazi mentioned was discipline.

“I would say discipline, patience, and fear of God,” he said. For a young person trying to build a career, business or any other dream, discipline can mean staying committed even when there is no immediate reward.

Talent may create an opportunity, but discipline can determine what happens after that opportunity comes. Mr Eazi’s own career has moved beyond music. Alongside his work as an Afrobeats artiste, he has built interests in business and entertainment, making his advice part of a wider conversation about creating a lasting career rather than simply chasing quick success.

2. Patience

The second quality was patience. In an era where young people can see other people’s achievements almost instantly on social media, the pressure to succeed quickly can be intense. But Mr Eazi’s advice suggests that success does not always happen on the timeline people expect.

Patience allows people to continue working while waiting for their efforts to produce results. It also helps them understand that setbacks and slow progress do not necessarily mean that a dream has failed.

For young people who may feel behind because of what they see others achieving, this part of Mr Eazi’s message is particularly important.

3. The Fear of God

The third quality Mr Eazi named was the fear of God.

“I would say discipline, patience, and fear of God,” he said. While discipline speaks to how a person approaches work and patience speaks to how they handle the journey, his reference to the fear of God brings values and personal principles into his definition of success.

It suggests that, in his view, achieving something is not the only goal. How a person conducts themselves while pursuing it also matters.

When Doubt Becomes Motivation

Mr Eazi

Mr Eazi also opened up about another part of the journey that many young people can relate to: being doubted. Speaking about some of the difficulties he encountered while building his career, he referred to “the difficulty of unbelief” that comes when someone is being second-guessed.

But rather than seeing doubt only as something negative, he said it can become a source of motivation.

“You can turn it into something that drives you as well.”

For someone pursuing an unfamiliar path, being questioned by friends, family or even oneself can be discouraging. Mr Eazi’s point was that the same doubt can also become fuel to keep going and prove that the decision to pursue a particular dream was worth it.

Why His Advice Is Getting Attention

Mr Eazi

Mr Eazi’s comments carry more weight because his own journey goes beyond making hit songs.

Born Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, the singer began building his entrepreneurial instincts long before he became known as Mr Eazi. While studying mechanical engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Ghana, he organised parties and promoted artists. He later ventured into other businesses, including e-commerce and food distribution, before music gradually became the centre of his career.

His breakthrough came through music, particularly the sound he later described as Banku Music, a blend of Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian influences. Songs such as “Skin Tight”, “Leg Over” and “Pour Me Water” helped push him beyond Ghana and Nigeria, while collaborations with international stars including Beyoncé and Major Lazer expanded his audience. By 2016, he had won The Headies’ Next Rated award, and his growing profile eventually earned him a place on Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30list.

But Mr Eazi did not stop at being an artiste. In 2019, he launched emPawa Africa, a talent-incubation and music company created to help emerging African artists develop their careers. The programme provided funding and mentorship to new acts, turning Mr Eazi from simply an artist into someone investing directly in the next generation of African music talent.

One of the artists who benefited from the emPawa platform was Joeboy. After Mr Eazi discovered him online, Joeboy received support through the programme, including funding that helped him develop his music career. He would later become one of Nigeria’s major Afrobeats acts.

Mr Eazi also moved into investment. In 2022, he launched Zagadat Capital, an investment firm focused on African-founded businesses. Its portfolio has included companies across sectors such as technology, entertainment and consumer businesses.

His business interests have also been linked to fintech, gaming and sports, showing how his career has expanded well beyond music. Reports on his investments have highlighted ventures including PawaPay and BetPawa, among others.

That background helps explain why his answer about success was not simply about becoming famous. Mr Eazi has experienced different stages of the journey himself — from experimenting with businesses and promoting parties as a student, to finding success as a recording artiste, and eventually putting money and resources into other African businesses and artists.

So when he tells young people to develop discipline, patience and the fear of God, the advice comes from a career that has involved repeated reinvention.

And perhaps that is the bigger lesson behind his street-interview response: success, at least from Mr Eazi’s experience, is not only about getting your big break. It is also about what you do before, during and after that break.

Conclusion

For young people looking for a shortcut to success, Mr Eazi’s message is relatively straightforward: there may not be one.

His advice points instead to qualities that take time to develop. His unexpected “marry a good wife” answer may have grabbed the attention first, but his larger message was about building the character needed to stay on the journey.

Because getting an opportunity may open the door, but according to Mr Eazi, what happens after that can depend on how prepared a person is to walk through it.
