Warri Pikin’s Timaya controversy: Why GehGeh & Ifedayo Agoro disagree over her apology withdrawal
SHARE

What began as a few seconds of interaction between comedian Real Warri Pikin and singer Timaya on stage has developed into a wider debate about marriage, public criticism and how much outsiders should say about a couple’s relationship.

The controversy started after Timaya lifted Real Warri Pikin during his performance at the 2026 African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA) in Dallas, Texas, on September 12. The moment went viral, with some netizens questioning the interaction because the comedian is married.

Warri Pikin, whose real name is Anita Asuoha, later apologised to her husband, Ikechukwu Asuoha, and to Nigerians who felt offended. She explained that she had not known Timaya intended to lift her and said she initially resisted before eventually taking part in the stunt.

But the apology did not end the conversation.
Days later, Warri Pikin changed her tone, saying she had done what she did “with my full chest” and would do it again.

That second response opened another chapter in the controversy, this time bringing social media personalities GehGeh and Ifedayo Agoro into the discussion.

From Apology To Defiance

Warri Pikin

Warri Pikin’s first response to the backlash was apologetic. In a video posted on September 13, she pleaded with Nigerians to calm down and said she took responsibility for what happened. She also acknowledged that her husband was unhappy about the incident.

The comedian had explained that she was backstage enjoying Timaya’s performance when he asked for a woman to join him on stage. She said she went out in the excitement of the moment but did not know she would be lifted. She said:

“Normally if Timaya dey perform “Ukwu”, he go bring one for his fans come out, make dem jump for his body, he go con carry them. I no know.”

When he indicated that she should jump towards him, she said she immediately became reluctant. In her words:

“Na him e tell me say you go jump o. I say no o, abeg. Abeg I no go jump o, abeg abeg.”

She repeatedly said she begged him not to carry her and urged people to watch the full video rather than judge the incident from a short clip. She said:

“If you watch the full video, you go see where I dey beg am. Before I even jump the jump sef, I dey reluctant.”

She later described some of the people criticising her as her “online in-laws”, saying some had even gone as far as suggesting that she leave her marriage. She made it clear that she had no intention of doing so.

At that point, it appeared the matter had been addressed. But by September 20, Warri Pikin was no longer speaking from a position of apology. In her words:

“Real Warri Pikin, you are posting content back-to-back. You’re not even remorseful. I’m so disappointed in her husband. How can he go to the airport to pick her up after all she did?
“Angry birds, make una come. Make I really tell you wetin dey my mind. I dey cruise since. I dey use the matter dey play since because I feel say e no serious.

“They go comment section, dey say, ‘Forgive me.’ See, make I tell you now my mind. I did what I did with my full chest, and I will do it over and over again. I’m not sorry. I will never be sorry.

“I’m an entertainer. The stage is my shrine. I will defend it any day, any time. You hear me? So go knack your head for wall. I no send una papa. You hear me? I no send una papa.
“I can never be sorry. You say I should not post content….
“I will jump over and over again if I have to…”

The change in tone became the new talking point, and that was where GehGeh came in.

GehGeh Wants Another Apology

GehGeh

On September 21, social media personality Emmanuel Obruste, popularly known as GehGeh, criticised Warri Pikin over her second video.

Rather than seeing the new statement as a defence of her work as an entertainer, GehGeh viewed it as a problem for her marriage. He gave the comedian 24 hours to delete the video and apologise again. He said:

“It’s a big shame. Real Warri Pikin, you need advice. I am giving you 24 hours to delete that video from your platform and apologise to Nigerians because that video is a direct attack on the ego of your husband.”

GehGeh went further, saying: “If he won’t talk, I will speak for him.”

His argument was centred on what he considers appropriate boundaries within marriage. He also questioned the stage interaction itself, arguing that Timaya would not accept another man treating his wife in a similar manner. He added:

“Even the Timaya that you did that thing with on stage won’t allow anybody to touch his wife like that.”

For GehGeh, therefore, Warri Pikin’s withdrawal from her earlier apologetic position was not simply about an entertainer defending her stage performance. He saw it as a fresh issue involving her husband’s dignity and what he described as his ego.

Why Ifedayo Agoro Sees It Differently

Ifedayo Agoro

While GehGeh was demanding another apology, entrepreneur and content creator Ifedayo Agoro took a different position. Her argument was less about whether Warri Pikin’s stage decision was appropriate and more about the reaction to her husband.

Agoro questioned why people expected Ikechukwu Asuoha to publicly discipline his wife, condemn her online or even leave the marriage because of something they disagreed with. She asked:

“I have a question. Why is it important to some of you that when a woman does something you don’t approve of, and her husband supports her, the man is suddenly weak, is a simp, and you expect her to be punished for it?”

She continued:

“I’m just looking at people reacting to Real Warri Pikin, and I’m wondering, what’s going on here? Why is it that whenever a successful woman says something to the internet and they don’t like it or they don’t approve of it, they start looking at her husband?

“You should put her in check. You should leave her. What kind of woman is that? I’m sorry for her husband. He’s a simp. He’s weak.”

She also challenged the assumption that a husband who does not publicly condemn his wife must be weak or controlled. Agoro asked:

“Do you genuinely believe that this successful woman marries rubbish men? How are you dictating to another man what to accept in his own marriage?”

Ifedayo Agoro then shared her own personal experience and linked it to Warri Pikin’s. She continued:

“Why are you embarrassing yourself? I have even experienced this. You are embarrassing yourself by sending DMs to people’s husbands, telling them, ‘I’m sorry for you, the marriage you are in, you should leave your wife.’
“Who do you think you are? You are typing a whole paragraph to somebody’s husband about the marriage that you are not inside. Imagine the audacity.

“And there’s this part I find particularly interesting. Why do you want the woman to suffer for her actions that you don’t like? What exactly will happen to her that will satisfy you?
“Her husband leaving her? She deactivates her Instagram and never posts for a long time? Her husband should embarrass her publicly, or he should come online and complain to you so that internet strangers can clap for him?

“What exactly are your expectations? All of you mob, all you want is to see the woman suffer. Why does her suff£ring matter to you so much?
“Because throughout my adult life, I’ve never seen somebody who is genuinely happy with their own lives advocate for another woman’s suffering.

“Who told you that this husband that you’re calling weak and simp are not the real backbones of their wife? Who told you that they’re not happy? Did they come and explain to you that their marriage is in crisis?
“How arrogant of you to make such assumptions. Who told you that this man is not happy in his marriage? Why is that possibility not even available to you?

“I know why. It’s because some of you cannot fathom the possibility of ever being with a powerful woman. The kind of woman we like are the ones where you can repress and dominate her life because that’s the only validation of masculinity.

“From time immemorial, successful women have had happy marriages despite noise from the outside, especially noise from people who don’t matter.
Listen, I know you already know this, but I’ll tell you anyway. You are just a ranting internet stranger. Your vote in how successful their marriage is does not count.”

That is the main point where her position differs from GehGeh’s. While GehGeh is looking at the controversy through the lens of marital boundaries and the husband’s ego, Agoro is questioning the assumptions outsiders are making about the marriage in the first place.

The Husband Became Part Of The Debate

Warri Pikin & husband, Ikechukwu

One reason the disagreement has grown is the public attention on Ikechukwu Asuoha. Warri Pikin said during her initial apology that her husband was angry about what happened. However, he has not publicly reacted about the wider controversy. That silence has itself attracted commentary.

Some netizens questioned why he had not publicly confronted the situation, while others speculated about the dynamics of the marriage.

Agoro’s argument is that outsiders simply do not have enough information about what happens between a husband and wife privately. She questioned why people would assume that the marriage was in trouble or that Ikechukwu needed to prove his masculinity by publicly reacting to his wife’s actions.

Conclusion

The Timaya–Warri Pikin controversy has moved through several stages in less than two weeks: a viral stage moment, public criticism, an apology, a change in tone and now a disagreement over what that change means.

For GehGeh, Warri Pikin’s decision to stand by the moment after apologising crossed a line involving her husband and their marriage.

For Ifedayo Agoro, the bigger issue is why outsiders believe they should dictate how another couple handles disagreement in their marriage.

As both positions continue to circulate online, the original stage moment has become only one part of a much larger conversation about marriage, celebrity life and the boundaries between public opinion and private relationships.
