On October 8, 1949, the newly-formed Nigerian national football team secured a decisive 2-0 victory over Sierra Leone at the Kingtom Field, marking the first ever international match for Nigeria and bringing home a historic win before a crowd of some 8,000 spectators.

The match, played in sweltering conditions on Saturday, October 8th, saw Nigeria display determination and skill to overcome the Sierra Leone side in what is considered the debut of the national team on the international stage.

Nigeria took the lead in the 35th minute when forward Etim Esene netted a well-placed shot from just outside the penalty area, following a swift passing move down the left wing. The crowd, composed largely of local football enthusiasts and colonial officials, erupted as the Nigeria side went ahead.

Sierra Leone pressed hard in the second half, but Nigeria’s defence, led by captain Peter Anwana, held firm against repeated attacks.

The second goal came late in the match, in the 78th minute, as winger Jonathan Okolie capitalised on a defensive error to strike home, sealing the victory for Nigeria.

The Sierra Leone team, though spirited throughout, were unable to break through the disciplined Nigerian defence as the final whistle was blown to cheers from the small contingent of Nigerian supporters who had journeyed from Lagos for the occasion.

Speaking after the match, team manager and coach Mr. J. C. Adedeji described the result as “a proud day for Nigeria and for Nigerian football”.

He praised the players for their discipline and sportsmanlike conduct, noting that the match was played in cordial atmosphere and great camaraderie between the two sides.
