October 14 in Nigerian History: Wole Soyinka Returns from Exile

On October 14, 1998, Nobel laureate and pro-democracy activist, Prof. Wole Soyinka, returned to Nigeria, marking a major symbolic moment for civil society and the end of intense pressure under military rule.

Soyinka, who went into self-exile in 1994 following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election and the clampdown on pro-democracy activists by the regime of the late General Sani Abacha, arrived in Lagos to a warm reception by journalists, activists and civil society groups.

The literary icon was one of the most prominent critics of the Abacha dictatorship. In 1997, the military junta charged him with treason and sentenced him to death in absentia.

The charges were lifted in 1998 following the death of Abacha and the emergence of General Abdulsalami Abubakar, who initiated the transition to civil rule.

Speaking to journalists on arrival, Soyinka described his years in exile as a period of anger that he had to leave his country in the first place.

He said his return signalled renewed hope for democracy and freedom of expression.
