Chita Agwu’s story: A 4-day proposal, 11 years of marriage & quiet divorce

Some chapters of life begin with excitement and promises of forever, while others end in ways no one may have imagined at the beginning. Between those two moments are years of memories, decisions and experiences that remain largely unknown to the public.

For Nollywood actress Chita Agwu, a new chapter has begun. And this time, she has made it clear that she intends to turn the page on her own terms.

A Love Story That Began on Instagram

Chita Agwu & Johnson Maduabuchi

Chita Agwu’s relationship with businessman Johnson Maduabuchi reportedly began on Instagram. What started online soon moved into a real-life relationship, with the couple progressing quickly from their first physical meeting to an engagement.

They met on Instagram after he slid into her direct messages (DMs). Johnson, a Malaysia-based businessman, saw Chita in a movie and did some background research on her. He then sent her a DM on Instagram complimenting her, describing her as beautiful, homely, and reserved. Even though both of them are originally from Uburu in Ebonyi State, Johnson initially joked and told her that he was from Anambra State before revealing the truth.

The two spoke online for two weeks while he was overseas. As soon as he flew back to Nigeria to meet her in person, they felt an instant connection, and he proposed to her just four days after their first physical meeting.

She famously shared this whirlwind romance story publicly in late 2022 to defend DJ Cuppy, proving that finding love quickly and getting engaged right away is completely possible.

In a 2023 interview as well, the actress also spoke warmly about her husband at the time, describing him as “heaven-sent”. Her account offered a glimpse into how she viewed the relationship in its early days. The proposal came quickly, and the couple went on to build a life together.

From Wedding Celebrations to 11 Years of Marriage

Chita and Maduabuchi’s relationship moved from courtship to marriage in 2014.

The couple held their traditional wedding on October 25, 2014, marking a major step in their relationship. They followed it with a white wedding in June 2015. Over the years, their marriage became part of Chita’s personal story as an actress and public figure. Although she occasionally spoke about her relationship in interviews, much of their private life remained outside public discussion.

The marriage lasted 11 years before Chita announced that it had legally ended. The contrast between the couple’s early story and the news of their separation is striking. A relationship that began with a swift proposal and wedding celebrations has now reached a different chapter.

However, the length of a marriage alone cannot tell the full story of what happened within it.

Chita Agwu Announces That Her Marriage Is Legally Over

On October 19, 2026, Chita publicly announced that her marriage had been dissolved by the court. In a statement titled “A Personal Announcement”, she confirmed the development and explained that she was ready to move forward. She wrote:

“After much thought and a journey that has been deeply personal, I wish to officially inform the public that my marriage has been legally dissolved by the court.”

She described the development as the end of one chapter of her life and the beginning of another. She added

“This chapter of my life has come to an end, and I have chosen to embrace this new beginning with peace, grace, and dignity.”

Her statement confirmed the legal end of the marriage without offering details about the circumstances that led to the divorce.

Why She Is Keeping the Details Private

Chita Agwu

While public announcements about celebrity relationships often lead to questions and speculation, Chita made it clear that she would not be discussing the private circumstances of her divorce.

She acknowledged that marriage does not always end as people hope, writing: “Marriage is a personal journey, and not every story ends the way we once hoped.”

She also stressed that people should be allowed to move forward without being subjected to judgment or humiliation. She stated:

“Out of respect for everyone involved, I will not be sharing private details or engaging in public discussions about the circumstances surrounding my divorce.”

She then asked the public to respect the privacy of both herself and her former partner. Her decision means that, although the legal end of the marriage is now public knowledge, the reasons behind it remain private.

Choosing Peace Over Public Explanations

One of the strongest messages in Chita’s announcement was her decision to focus on healing rather than public controversy. She expressed gratitude to those who had supported her and made it clear that she wanted to move forward without bitterness. She wrote:

“As I begin this new chapter, I choose peace over controversy, healing over bitterness, and growth over public explanations.”

The statement suggests that she wants the next stage of her life to be defined by what lies ahead rather than by questions about her marriage.

She also addressed the possibility of public judgment, arguing that the end of a marriage should not become an excuse for ridicule or humiliation.

A New Chapter for Chita Agwu

The end of a marriage does not erase the years that came before it. For Chita, the relationship with Maduabuchi remains part of her life story, from their early connection on Instagram to their wedding celebrations and the years that followed.

But her announcement makes clear that she does not want her future defined solely by the end of the relationship. She wrote:

“My marriage has ended, but my life continues.”

She ended her statement by saying she was moving forward “with my head held high, my dignity intact, and my heart open to the future”.

Those words capture the message she wants the public to take from her announcement, that the marriage is over, but her life is not.

Conclusion

From a proposal that reportedly came four days after their first physical meeting to a marriage that lasted 11 years, Chita Agwu’s relationship with Johnson Maduabuchi has reached its legal end.

The actress has confirmed the divorce but has chosen not to make the reasons behind it public. For now, the details of what happened within the marriage remain hers and her former partner’s to keep private. What she has chosen to share is simple: the chapter has ended, and she is ready to move forward.
