Since the Federal Government announced the Nigeria NERSI cash relief scheme, one question has dominated WhatsApp groups, motor parks and comment sections: how do I get my own ₦50,000? The honest answer is that you cannot apply for it. You either get picked, or you don’t.

What NERSI is and why it was launched

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction announced the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI) on October 30, 2026, describing it as a presidential initiative to give immediate financial relief to the most vulnerable Nigerians. The ministry, led by Dr. Bernard Doro, says global food inflation and the high cost of essential goods keep squeezing households. NERSI is built as a shock-responsive cash transfer, meant to give basic relief to millions of vulnerable households and help them stabilise in the short term.

The government also says NERSI is not replacing anything. Doro described it as complementary to existing federal social protection and economic support programmes. That matters because Nigerians already receive other transfers, which we come back to below.

Is it ₦50,000 every month or just once?

This is where the story gets messy. In the minister’s announcement, eligible beneficiaries will receive ₦50,000 monthly, and the ministry says the programme will be reviewed regularly as living costs change, with beneficiaries told directly before any adjustment.

Yet the official NERSI website’s FAQ section describes the support as a one-off ₦50,000 payment into a mobile wallet. A separate explainer citing official information also says selected beneficiaries receive the money as a one-off payment, not monthly. The government has not yet reconciled the two, and the minister did not state how long the intervention will run.

For now, treat the ₦50,000 as confirmed and the “monthly” part as unconfirmed. Until the ministry clears this up, don’t budget around a second or third payment.

Who qualifies for NERSI?

The ministry has not published a detailed eligibility checklist. The announcement does not specify age limits, income thresholds, household size, state restrictions or the total number of beneficiaries.

What is known is how names are chosen. Beneficiaries are selected through verified national identity records and the National Social Register, with the programme targeting poor and vulnerable households across the six geopolitical zones. The National Social Register is the database that grew out of the cash transfer programme Nigeria introduced in 2016, which supported poor and vulnerable households identified through the register.

In practice, that means your chances depend on whether your NIN is verified and whether your household is already in the system. Nobody outside the ministry can tell you in advance whether you qualify.

How the payment reaches you

The process is simple, and it has one step that matters most: your reply.

  • You get an SMS. The ministry is working with licensed digital financial service providers, and beneficiaries will get a text from one of them asking for consent. The named providers are ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo PSB and NairaGram.
  • You consent. Recipients are asked to reply YES or use the provider’s USSD code.
  • The money is sent. Once consent is given, payment goes directly to the beneficiary’s account or mobile wallet.
  • Payments are rolling out in stages. Selected beneficiaries may be notified at different times, and not everyone will be included in the first phase. The government has not published a timetable showing when each batch will be paid. If your neighbour got a text and you didn’t, that alone doesn’t mean you’ve been excluded.

Beware of the ₦20,000 messages and the scammers

Whenever free money is announced in Nigeria, fraudsters follow within hours. The ministry’s position is blunt: beneficiaries are not required to apply, pay any fee or register through any agent.

Some people have reported receiving messages about a ₦20,000 payment. Official information does not confirm that ₦20,000 is a first tranche of a monthly ₦50,000. If a message looks odd, verify it before acting.

Rules to follow:

  • Never share your PIN, BVN or OTP with anyone. The ministry has said so in plain terms.
  • Don’t pay anyone to “add your name” or “release your money.”
  • Ignore websites and Telegram groups offering registration. No public online registration has been announced. (msmeafricaonline)
  • Confirm doubtful messages through the official helpline, 0700-022-2222, or the programme page at www.fmhapr.gov.ng/nersi/.

NERSI vs HoPE-CT: don’t mix them up

Many Nigerians are confusing the two schemes. The government has clarified the difference between the Household Prosperity and Empowerment (HoPE-CT) cash transfer and NERSI. HoPE-CT gives eligible households ₦75,000 in three tranches of ₦25,000, while NERSI is a separate relief intervention. Getting a text about one doesn’t tell you anything about the other.

Why the scheme is getting scrutiny

There is context behind the cautious tone. The World Bank reported that the Federal Government had disbursed ₦658.9 billion in direct cash transfers to 10.46 million poor and vulnerable households by September 2026. That is a large number, but Nigeria’s cost-of-living pressure is larger. Commentators have pointed out that a ₦50,000 payment, at roughly US$37, can help with immediate expenses but is unlikely to solve deeper affordability problems, with rent, food and transport still rising. How many households are actually reached, and how regularly, will decide whether NERSI makes a real difference.

What to do now

  • Make sure your NIN is linked to your active phone number.
  • Keep your phone reachable and check SMS carefully over the coming weeks.
  • Reply only to messages from the approved providers, and only after you’ve confirmed they’re genuine.
  • Ignore anyone selling “slots,” forms or insider access.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for the NERSI cash relief?

No. The ministry says there is no application, and selection is done from existing records.

Is NERSI ₦50,000 monthly?

The minister’s statement says monthly, but the programme’s own FAQ says one-off. This is unresolved.

How do I know if I’ve been selected?

You’ll get an SMS from ALAT by Wema Bank, MoMo PSB or NairaGram asking for your consent.

Does it cost anything?

No. Anyone asking for money is a scammer.

Who do I call if I’m unsure about a message?

The official NERSI helpline, 0700-022-2222.
